As this week’s U.S. severe weather event made its way through Houston yesterday, ImpactWeather TropicsWatch Manager Chris Hebert took a few moments every ¼-hour or so to check one of the local bayou cams – the “Harris Gully Box Culvert” cam – and to trap the occasional image. Here’s a 20-second compilation that spans a [...]

ImpactWeather StormWatch Domestic Supervisor Mike Venske weighs in on what we can expect from Mother Nature. The primary threats this week will be centered over the Gulf Coast, Tennessee Valley and Deep South as a slow-moving area of upper-level low pressure interacts with increasing Gulf moisture producing areas of locally heavy rainfall which will likely [...]

The U.S. has been experiencing a lack of weather for the past couple of weeks. Of course, that’s not scientifically true — there’s always weather: good weather, fair weather, bad weather, severe weather, changing weather, subjective weather. The current storm track situation — the past couple of weeks, this week and, to a large degree, next week — is making skiers across the country quite frustrated. It’s making those running ski resorts quite frustrated, too. Why? Both fall and early winter have been under the influence of La Niña and a positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation.

It’s setting up to look very interesting early next week across parts of the U. K. and Ireland — again. Wednesday and Thursday of this week, Scotland took a huge slam from a North Atlantic low pressure system. Winds in some of the most exposed areas topped 100 mph with a peak wind recorded of [...]

It sure doesn’t feel like spring today across the northern U.S. from the Northern Plains into the Northeast as a fast moving low pressure system brings a good chance of locally heavy snow through Thursday morning. Snow will increase in coverage and intensity across Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and Michigan this afternoon and evening. Then it [...]

A fast-moving low pressure area will move from coastal New England through the Canadian Maritime Provinces producing a good chance of locally heavy snow. Falling snow will increase in coverage and intensity over central New England late this morning, spreading quickly northeast across the Canadian Maritime this afternoon through Saturday morning.

Another significant winter weather event is under way and will dive south and east across the Rockies, Plains, and portions of the Mississippi River Valley through the middle of the week. This will bring an increased risk of moderate-to-heavy accumulations of snow, some mixed wintry precipitation to the south, and gusty winds associated with the strong low pressure center.

Snow is falling across the Northern Rockies this morning as I’m writing this and it looks to increase in coverage and intensity as we head into the afternoon/evening hours. Snow will spread from the Northern Rockies of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and northwestern Colorado south and eastward into the High Plains of Wyoming, northeastern Colorado, western [...]
