The employees of ImpactWeather and Universal Weather and Aviation just mailed 101 care packages to the troops of the 515th Engineer Company — the 515th Sappers. That should work out to one care package for each sapper, plus a few for a rainy day. But I’m sure your first question is the same as mine: What’s a sapper?

Accosted is the wrong word, but on two occasions this past weekend “friends” of mind said something along these lines: “Hey, Weatherman! Where are all the hurricanes you and your ilk predicted.” I told them to go back to cutting the grass, but their curiosity isn’t unfounded.

This morning’s low of 19 is the lowest September temperature ever recorded for International Falls. A bit further to the south, Duluth recorded snowfall yesterday — another record for the earliest snowfall ever recorded in Duluth.

On the 3rd floor, we had no such flooding concerns but the vibrations and the groaning of the building made us all wonder how much more it could stand. And the Melcher Building is a big building — we knew it could withstand a lot, but we all know hurricanes can bring out the best and worst in building design.
