Our View of the World

There’s an email that goes around every now and then that shows an image of all the air traffic routes around the world; another showing the actual planes in the air around the world. One of my favorites is an email with a composite of various visible satellite images of the entire globe showing where lights are on at night. Impressive stuff – the planes, the lights; our world.

At ImpactWeather we have a different way of showing our world. Our hand-drawn fronts, pressure centers and areas of precipitation, displayed on a mercator projection courtesy of our new Gmaps 2.0, shows the amazing number of weather systems in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Armed with this image, it’s no wonder that extreme weather disasters affected 55 million people and generated $58 billion (USD) in losses around the globe in 2009.

ImpactWeather meteorologists update this image, as well as others including significant aviation weather features, twice daily.
