A winter storm dumped more than 10 inches of snow in Seoul on Monday. The snowfall was the worst since Korea began conducting meteorological surveys in 1937.
The snow and icy roads slowed down traffic in and out of Seoul. Airports were forced to cancel hundreds of flights.
The winter storm also hit Beijing. More than 3 inches of snow accumulated in the city on Sunday. State media called it the highest snowfall in the capital in a single day in January since 1951. Around 8 inches was recorded in the suburbs of Changping near the Great Wall of China. Hundreds of flights from Beijing were also canceled or delayed due to the snow.
Heavy snow blanketed Sapporo on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido as well, forcing the main airport to cancel nearly 80 flights since last Wednesday.
Temperatures are a big story as well across Asia. In northern China temperatures could fall to around minus 32 degrees Celsius (-26F). Beijing is likely to shiver to about minus 10 degrees Celsius in daytime and colder at night, touching decades-old records.
